What is time-based one-time password (TOTP)?
A time-based one-time password (TOTP) is a temporary passcode generated by an algorithm that uses the current time of day as one of the input factors. Time-based one-time passwords are commonly used for two-factor authentication (2FA) and have seen growing adoption in recent years.
In TOTP based two-factor authentication scenario, a user must correctly enter a traditional log in credentials such as username and password first before the system will prompt for a TOTP 2FA code. Most commonly, the TOTP codes are delivered to users via an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator and are valid for 30 seconds.
What is RoboForm's role in TOTP 2FA process?
Starting November 30th 2021, RoboForm is including its own TOTP authenticator as a standard part of the existing RoboForm apps and browser extensions on all platforms.
This means that RoboForm users can now:
a) Store the authentication 2FA enabling keys directly in the RoboForm app or browser extension.
b) Use RoboForm to generate and fill the TOTP code needed for a successful authentication to any online account or a system with TOTP 2FA enabled.
Why use RoboForm as a TOTP authenticator instead of Google Authenticator?
a) RoboForm will generate and automatically fill the TOTP code for you when logging in to an online account from a browser. This removes the hassle of locating, copying, pasting, or manually entering in the TOTP code from a separate app.
b) Have you ever lost or replaced your phone with Google Authenticator on it? It's a messy business reenabling all the TOTP based 2FA on a new mobile device. With RoboForm, all once enabled TOTP 2FA's will sync with your RoboForm account and will be available to you as soon as you install and log in to RoboForm on a new device.
